God’s Gifts to Us

I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that was given you in Christ Jesus, that in every way you were enriched in him in all speech and all knowledge—even as the testimony about Christ was confirmed among you—so that you are not lacking in any gift, as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will sustain you to the end, guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

(1 Corinthians 1:4-9 ESV)

This past Wednesday, I had the opportunity to preach on 1 Corinthians 1:4-9.  Through that particular passage we are able to see that God gives gifts to build the body to accomplish His good will until He returns.  God had richly blessed the Corinthians with speech, knowledge, and spiritual gift but the spiritual gifts that they had attained had led them to an inappropriate pride.

We must remember that God is the source of our gifts (1 Corinthians 4:7).  While God blesses all people differently, the gifts that you and I have been given are to be used to accomplish His purposes.  One gift is not better than the other as all have a purpose in the body.

Not only is God the source of our gifts but He is also the organizer of our gifts (1 Corinthians 1:7a).  God has given the local body of believers various gifts so that the body would not lack in any one gift (1 Corinthians 12:4-6).  God has given different gifts to all people because He has a specific calling for them to accomplish.  If everyone had the same gift then the body would be lacking (1 Corinthians 12:12-26).  It is through those differences that God gets the most glory from His bride while we are here on earth (1 Corinthians 1:7).
